A decisive operation by Edo State’s Special Security Squad, Operation Flush Out Cultists and Kidnappers, has led to the destruction of five suspected kidnapper camps deep in the Ekeke Erah Forest, Owan East Local Government Area. The coordinated raid involving Nigerian Army personnel, local vigilantes, and other security agencies reflects Governor Monday Okpebholo’s intensified push for safer communities in Edo State.
Operatives trekked approximately five kilometers into the dense forest between Afuze and Ora for the six-hour exercise that uncovered the camps showing signs of recent habitation. Squad member Eribo Ewanta highlighted indications occupants had fled moments before arrival. “We found fire still burning and a pot of food left on the fire. This confirms the presence of suspected kidnappers in this area,” Ewanta said.
A fierce gun exchange erupted at a riverbank as suspects attempted escape, with security forces indicating possible ties to armed herdsmen due to evidence of cattle grazing. “We engaged the suspects in a serious gun duel, but they escaped deeper into the forest. Their camps have been dismantled and destroyed. Edo State will no longer provide safe haven for criminal elements,” Ewanta stated assertively.
Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Fred Itua, lauded the Governor’s resolve to bolster security, noting it sends a strong message to criminals. Ewanta affirmed relentless pursuit of kidnappers remains a priority. “We are battle ready. Edo must be free of criminal elements. We will pursue them until they are apprehended,” he underscored.
