The Armed Forces of Nigeria has confirmed the arrest of sixteen officers for indiscipline and breaches of service regulations following a routine military exercise. Investigations into the matter revealed the officers’ grievances were largely rooted in perceived career stagnation stemming from repeated failures in promotion examinations alongside other contributing factors.
In a statement, the Armed Forces explained some of the apprehended officers were already facing jurisdiction for various offences, either awaiting or undergoing trial, underscoring their conduct fell short of military service standards. “Their conduct was deemed incompatible with the standards of military service,” the statement noted.
Upon concluding investigations, indicted officers will undergo the full military disciplinary process aligned with established procedures. “Upon completion of investigation, indicted officers will face the full military disciplinary process in accordance with established procedures to ensure accountability and preserve professionalism within the Armed Forces,” the statement read.
The military emphasized these measures are strictly disciplinary, forming part of routine efforts to sustain order, discipline and loyalty within ranks. “The Armed Forces wishes to assure the general public that these actions are strictly disciplinary in nature and part of routine efforts to maintain order, discipline, and loyalty within the ranks,” it affirmed.
Asserting institutional resolve, the Armed Forces declared intolerance toward actions undermining its integrity or constitutional democratic role. “The Armed Forces will not tolerate behaviour that undermines the integrity of the institution or threatens its constitutional role under democratic authority,” it warned.
Reaffirming dedication to mandate, the statement concluded, “The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains fully committed to its constitutional responsibilities and will remain professional at all times”. Signed by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information.
