Yenagoa, Bayelsa State – Governor Douye Diri has announced the procurement of two aircraft to kickstart commercial flight operations from Bayelsa International Airport, signaling a major push to boost connectivity and economic activity in the state. The disclosure was made during the visit of Dr. Tin Louise-George, Prime Minister of the State of Africa In Diaspora, to Government House, Yenagoa, on Monday, October 7, 2025.
In a statement, Chief Press Secretary Daniel Alabrah indicated Governor Diri expressed optimism about transforming the airport into a commercially vibrant hub, with flights linking Yenagoa to key Nigerian cities like Lagos and Abuja. “We are expecting two aircraft, which government has already procured. These aircraft would operate daily flights to Lagos and Abuja,” Governor Diri said, underscoring efforts to revive functional air services after previous arrangements faltered.
Governor Diri warmly welcomed Dr. Tin Louise-George on his maiden Nigeria visit, lauding the State of Africa in Diaspora’s potential, comparing it to Doctors Without Borders. Diri highlighted readiness to partner on airport expansion and a smart city project – the New Yenagoa City – touting prospects for local economic empowerment. “Wherever you have an airport, constant electricity and water, it is as good as any place you stay to eke out a living,” Diri remarked.
Dr. Louise-George proposed collaboration on development projects in Bayelsa, referencing the Africa Union’s 2003 designation of Africa In Diaspora as Africa’s sixth region, with 350 million African descendants globally. The Prime Minister expressed interest in supporting airport upgrades, a smart city initiative, education, and healthcare facilities. “We are ready to provide the resources to develop this airport, a smart city somewhere, education and a medical complex,” Dr. Louise-George stated, stressing mutual reinforcement between Africa and its diaspora.
The Prime Minister noted the visit aimed to explore cooperation areas, aligning with objectives to strengthen ties between Africa and its global diaspora. Governor Diri reciprocated enthusiasm for partnership, spotlighting Bayelsa’s developmental aspirations and potential synergies with Africa In Diaspora’s outreach.
Both leaders appeared keen on translating discussions into tangible collaborations fostering growth in Bayelsa and broader regional connectivity.
