Edo State Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo has lambasted the previous administration of Godwin Obaseki for commissioning uncompleted projects, describing the act as a disservice to Edo people and an attempt to conceal inefficiency. Chief Press Secretary Fred Itua disclosed this following the Governor’s inspection of key facilities including the Stella Obasanjo Hospital and Iyaro Education Hub Complex on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.

Speaking during the visit aimed at assessing infrastructure in health and education sectors, Governor Okpebholo expressed shock at the extent of incomplete works on facilities publicly declared commissioned under Obaseki. “I do not know why the previous administration commissioned this hospital when work was still ongoing,” Okpebholo said in dismay. “It is wrong to mislead the people with such gestures. Our duty is to finish what was started and ensure Edo people get full value for every naira spent.”

At Stella Obasanjo Hospital, Health Commissioner Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole indicated the facility stood at barely 60 percent completion, with many beds old and recycled. “We have gone round the facility with His Excellency, and it’s clear the hospital is far from completion,” Dr. Oshiomhole said, adding Okpebholo directed accelerated work for full completion swiftly.

Governor Okpebholo assured completion before Christmas, promising the hospital would be equipped and operational. “A lot of work has been done, but much more is left. The administrative block and theatre are incomplete. Between now and Christmas, we will ensure this hospital serves Edo people,” he stated.

Similar disappointment marked Okpebholo’s visit to Iyaro Education Hub, calling the former administration’s commissioning premature and misleading. “This building was hurriedly commissioned without power, equipment or operational capacity,” he lamented. Contractor George Bou Maroon explained the complex centralizes Edo’s education activities, housing key offices and facilities.

Okpebholo vowed focus on accountability and tangible results, asserting “cosmetic governance” is over in Edo State. “We aren’t here to play politics with Edo people’s lives. Our mission is to rebuild, restore and ensure projects serve people. Edo people deserve honesty and progress; that’s what we’ll deliver,” he declared. Fred Itua noted the administration would mobilize contractors soon to operationalize the Iyaro complex.
