Abuja – The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has embarked on a two-week total warning strike in Nigeria’s public universities effective Monday, October 13, suspending all academic and administrative activities nationwide. ASUU President Prof. Chris Piwuna announced the industrial action citing government’s persistent neglect of critical issues.

“The decision follows government’s failure to address longstanding demands including unpaid allowances, deplorable funding, and unmet agreements,” Prof. Piwuna stated. Lectures, examinations and university operations are halted across the country as ASUU asserting the action is a warning measure.

“This is a 14-day warning strike. We expect government responsiveness within this period before contemplating further indefinite action,” Prof. Piwuna cautioned.

Students and parents have voiced apprehension over disruptions. “We urge both parties reach sustainable resolution sparing students prolonged academic calendar setbacks,” said a worried parent.

ASUU cites unpaid lecturers’ arrears, deteriorating university infrastructure, and breached 2009 agreement among unresolved touchpoints prompting industrial action. Union insists dialogue remains pathway addressing festering higher education challenges.

Government reaction remains awaited as academic activities countrywide ground to halt impacting thousands undergraduates and postgraduates. ASUU stresses determined pursuit ameliorating plight Nigeria’s universities.
