Nigeria’s Finance Minister, Wale Edun, is confirmed to be ill, though the Presidency has firmly denied circulating reports that he suffered a serious stroke and was flown abroad for treatment. Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, addressed the situation, stating the minister is recuperating within the country. “Wale Edun did not have a stroke and is not abroad. He is in Abuja,” Onanuga said. The Presidency confirmed the 69-year-old minister became “indisposed” and is receiving care at his home in Abuja from Nigerian doctors.
Despite the denial of a stroke, the minister’s condition is significant enough to alter official duties. It was announced that Central Bank Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, will lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 2025 World Bank and International Monetary Fund Annual Meetings in place of Minister Edun. The Presidency has stated there are no plans to replace him as Minister of Finance.
