The Delta State House of Assembly has pledged to conduct a thorough review of the proposed landlord and tenant bill to ensure it addresses contemporary housing challenges, while safeguarding the rights of landlords, tenants, and agents.
Chairman of the House Joint Committee on Housing, Women Affairs, Girl-Child Entrepreneurship and Humanitarian Support Services, and the Committee on Urban Renewal, Bridget Anyafulu, made the assurance during a public hearing on the bill.
“The proposed legislation seeks to establish a clear and balanced legal framework for tenancy in Delta State,” Anyafulu stated, adding that the bill would repeal the outdated Rent Control and Recovery Law of 1977 to align with present-day realities in the housing sector.
Stakeholders, including representatives from the Customary Court of Appeal, the Ministry of Justice, and the Association of Tenants and Agents, called for specific amendments to strengthen the proposed law and ensure fairness to all parties.
