Dick Cheney, the former US Vice President who served under George W. Bush, has passed away at the age of 84. Cheney died on Monday due to complications from pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease, according to a statement from his family.

Widely regarded as the most powerful vice president in American history, Cheney played a crucial role in shaping the Bush administration’s policies, particularly in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. Despite his significant influence, Cheney’s tenure was marked by controversy, including his support for the Iraq War and the use of enhanced interrogation techniques.

Throughout his adult life, Cheney struggled with coronary problems, suffering five heart attacks between 1978 and 2010. He had a device implanted to regulate his heartbeat in 2001 and underwent a successful heart transplant in 2012. Despite these health issues, Cheney remained active and continued to make public appearances.

“Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country,” his family said in a statement. Former President George W. Bush praised Cheney, saying, “Laura and I will remember Dick Cheney for the decent, honorable man that he was. History will remember him as among the finest public servants of his generation – a patriot who brought integrity, high intelligence, and seriousness of purpose to every position he held.”
