Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has approved a significant increase in monthly allowances for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state, marking the first major adjustment in almost 30 years. The new plan includes a ₦20,000 state allowance, on top of the ₦77,000 paid by the federal government, with some corps members eligible to earn up to ₦127,000 per month.
According to Chief Press Secretary Njoku Ukoha, the increase is aimed at motivating young Nigerians serving in Abia and addressing the shortage of teachers and health workers in rural areas. “This is the first major adjustment in 27 years and reflects Governor Otti’s dedication to youth development and capacity building in Abia,” Ukoha said.
The state government has also invested in upgrading the NYSC orientation camp at Umunna in Bende Local Government Area, including improved roads, power supply, and repairs to hostels and offices. Corps members posted to state government offices will receive an extra ₦10,000, while those serving in schools and hospitals will get an additional ₦30,000.
Governor Otti emphasized that investing in people is key to securing the state’s future, stating, “The New Abia has paved the way for a New Era for Corps Members.” The Abia government has allocated over 35% of its budget to education and health, demonstrating its commitment to human capital development.
The increase has been widely praised, with Abia now considered one of the best places in Nigeria for corps members in terms of welfare and support. Officials said the new allowances will take effect soon, once payment arrangements are finalized.
