The Delta State Government has retired 489 employees in a major crackdown on impropriety, with the retirements taking effect from October 31, 2025. The move is part of the government’s efforts to weed out fake workers and ensure transparency in the civil service.
According to a statement from the Office of the Head of the State Civil Service, those axed include medical doctors, nurses, school heads, and at least one General Manager, who presented fake documents during the screening process. Many were disengaged for being overaged, following an assessment of their documents by the state Civil Service Commission.
A breakdown of the data shows that the Delta State Civil Service topped the list of casualties with 153 persons, followed by the Post-Primary Education Board with 133 cases, and the Hospitals Management Board with 84 casualties. Other affected institutions include the Delta State University Teaching Hospital, the Institute of Continuing Education, and the Judiciary.
The state government has vowed to continue its efforts to root out corruption and ensure accountability in the civil service. The retirements are part of a broader initiative to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the state’s workforce.
