Abuja – The Oyo State government said on Wednesday that an 18‑seater passenger bus collided with a stationary truck on the Oyo/Ogbomosho Expressway in Oyo town, resulting in a fire that killed at least 16 people. The incident occurred in front of Emmanuel Alayande University of Education.

The Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service Agency, Adebayo Akinwande, gave details of the tragedy in a statement issued on Wednesday. He said the first report of the crash was received at 06:21 hours on Tuesday, 25 November 2025, through a phone call. “Upon arrival at the scene, we observed an 18‑passenger Mazda bus, registration number GWL 687 XB (Kano), had swerved and crashed into a stationary Howo trailer, registration number LSR 340 XW (Lagos), from the rear. The trailer caught fire, and our fire crew quickly initiated rescue operations and extinguished the blaze,” Akinwande said.

Investigations by the fire service indicated that the bus swerved and struck the truck from behind, triggering a blaze that engulfed both vehicles and trapped passengers inside. The fire service recovered 16 bodies at the scene. Three survivors were pulled from the wreckage and taken to a nearby hospital by officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for medical treatment.

Akinwande attributed the accident to overspeeding and the careless parking of heavy trucks along the expressway, warning that such practices continue to pose serious risks to motorists and passengers alike. “The accident was caused by overspeeding and the reckless parking of heavy trucks on the highway,” he said. “We are continuing our investigations to determine the full circumstances that led to this tragic incident.”

The Oyo State government has expressed its condolences to the families of the victims and has pledged to take steps to improve road safety and enforce regulations on the parking of heavy vehicles on the expressway. Authorities said investigations are ongoing to establish accountability for the crash.
