Anambra State – An attack by armed men near the Afor Market Junction in Nawfia, Njikoka Local Government Area, left several people dead and many more injured on Sunday evening. The assailants arrived suddenly, opening fire on members of the community and causing immediate panic as residents fled for safety.

Witnesses described the scene as chaotic. “The attackers came out of nowhere and started shooting indiscriminately,” said one resident. “People were running everywhere, some fell and didn’t get up.” Video footage circulating online shows terrified residents sprinting past stalls while bodies lie motionless on the ground.

Another eyewitness recounted the coordinated nature of the assault. “They moved like a commando unit, very organized, and then vanished. We still don’t know why they did this,” the witness added.

The President General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, Chief Daniel Okoye, confirmed the attack in a statement, condemning the violence as an attempt to destabilize the peaceful community. “We condemn this brutal act and view it as a deliberate effort to sow fear and unrest,” Okoye said. He appealed for calm, urging residents to cooperate with security operatives while investigations continue. “We are working with the authorities to restore normalcy and will ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” he added, extending condolences to the families of the victims.

The Anambra State Police Command’s spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, was unavailable for comment, but a police source said an investigation has been launched. “Our officers are on the ground, gathering evidence and pursuing leads to apprehend the perpetrators,” the source said, condemning the killings and promising that all avenues will be explored to bring the attackers to justice.

The attack has left the community tense, with residents fearing further violence. Security agencies have been alerted, and efforts are underway to restore safety and order in Nawfia.
