Yenagoa – Bayelsa State is in mourning after its Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo, collapsed in his office at the Government House on Thursday, December 11, 2025 and was pronounced dead at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Yenagoa. He was 60 years old.
According to eyewitnesses, the deputy governor slumped around 1:30 p.m. while attending to official duties. “He slumped without warning. Before help could reach him, his condition had already worsened,” a government source told reporters ¹. Security aides and staff rushed him to the FMC, where medical personnel worked to resuscitate him. Despite emergency treatment, he was later confirmed dead.
Born on September 5, 1965, Ewhrudjakpo was a trained administrator and lawyer who served as Bayelsa’s Deputy Governor since February 2020 after a stint representing Bayelsa West in the Senate. Colleagues described him as a relentless worker. “He was a workaholic, always pushing himself. We often told him to slow down, but he never did,” a senior civil servant recalled ¹.
Leaders and citizens across the state expressed shock and sorrow. “It is a painful and unimaginable loss,” said a senior official, adding that the deputy governor’s dedication to Bayelsa left a huge void in government and in the hearts of the people. Condolences poured in from political figures and community leaders, with an official statement from the Bayelsa State Government expected soon.
Initial reports suggest the collapse may have been caused by a cardiac‑related emergency, though the exact cause has not been officially confirmed. Authorities have cordoned off the hospital as senior officials visited to pay their respects. Further information from the family and government representatives is awaited.
