Abuja – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reconstitution of the Board of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) following the Senate’s confirmation of its members on December 16. The President, in a statement, charged the newly formed board to deepen and consolidate the ongoing transformation of Nigeria’s power sector in strict alignment with the letter and spirit of the Electricity Act, 2023.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy), said in a statement that the appointments reflect the administration’s commitment to strengthening the regulatory framework for the electricity industry. Onanuga added that the President expects the board to ensure effective implementation of the Act and to drive much‑needed reforms across the sector. Onanuga noted that the reconstituted board brings together a wealth of experience from both the public and private sectors.
The reconstituted Board comprises Mulisiu Olalekan Oseni, PhD, who serves as Chairman. Dr Oseni began his service as a Commissioner in January 2017, later becoming Vice Chairman, and his appointment as Chairman took effect from 1 December 2025, to run until the completion of his ten‑year tenure as stipulated by the Electricity Act, 2023. Yusuf Ali, PhD, has been designated Vice Chairman, a role that commenced on 1 December 2025 and will continue until the end of his first term, having been first appointed as a Commissioner in February 2022.
Other members include Mr Nathan Rogers Shatti, serving a second term as Commissioner after his initial appointment in January 2017; Mr Dafe Akpeneye, also serving a second term following his first appointment in January 2017; Aisha Mahmud Kanti Bello, in her second term after being appointed in December 2020; Dr Chidi Ike, serving his first term after appointment in February 2022; and Dr Fouad Animashaun, appointed in December 2025 as an energy economist with extensive experience in the Nigerian power sector, most recently as Executive Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission.
President Tinubu urged the board members to “deepen and consolidate the ongoing transformation of Nigeria’s power sector, in strict alignment with the letter and spirit of the Electricity Act, 2023.” He expressed confidence that their combined expertise would help address the challenges facing the electricity supply chain and improve service delivery for citizens.
The announcement was signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy), on 18 December 2025.
