Maiduguri – A devastating explosion rocked a mosque at Gamborun Market in Maiduguri, Borno State capital, on Tuesday around 6PM, killing several worshippers and injuring others. The blast occurred during evening prayers, triggering panic and chaos in the busy market area.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as “chaotic”, saying the blast ripped through part of the mosque, killing some instantly. “I saw many victims being taken away for medical treatment,” witness Isa Musa Yusha’u told AFP.
Traders and residents fled as thick smoke billowed from the mosque, while others tried to assist victims before emergency responders arrived. Security operatives cordoned off the area to prevent further casualties and conduct investigations. No official casualty count has been released.
The incident highlights ongoing threats from Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents in northeastern Nigeria. No group has claimed responsibility.
