Kaduna – Prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has approached the Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna, seeking criminal summons against Facebook users George Udom and Bello Isiaka for allegedly publishing a fake “Breaking News” statement attributing a threat to him. The post claimed “If Minister of Defence Christopher Musa doesn’t stop military offensive against bandits, his entire family in Zango Kataf, Southern Kaduna will be eliminated,” using Gumi’s photo.
“The publication portrayed me as a troublemaker and threat to public peace, contrary to my reputation for preaching peace and tolerance,” Gumi said through lawyer Suleiman Danlami Lere. He received numerous calls believing he threatened the Minister, damaging his reputation.
The alleged acts contravene Sections 59, 57, 372, 116, and 117 of Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017. Gumi’s team urges the court to summon defendants.
“The era of hiding behind smartphones to destroy reputations is over,” Lere warned. The court hasn’t fixed a hearing date.
