Parliamentary workers at Nigeria’s National Assembly warn that persistent violations of the federal character principle in staff appointments could trigger industrial unrest. The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) protested to the National Assembly Service Commission, citing favouritism towards states already represented in secretary cadre, excluding others in the same zone.
Section 14(3) of the 1999 Constitution and Federal Character Commission Act mandate equitable representation. “Respect for federal character is crucial to avoid perceptions of bias and promote good governance,” said PASAN chairman Sabiyyi Sunday. He commended President Tinubu for reversing ADC Nuruddeen Yusuf’s promotion, urging the Commission to ensure fairness.
PASAN warned failure to comply could deepen distrust, undermining National Assembly bureaucracy equity. “We call on the Commission to act swiftly to prevent potential unrest,” Sunday added. The protest follows public backlash over military promotions perceived as bypassing procedures.
