A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, his son Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, and associate Asabe Bashir to be detained at Kuje and Suleja prisons until January 2, 2026, for a bail hearing. The trio face 16-count charges of alleged money laundering, concealment of illicit funds, and unlawful acquisition of assets worth over ₦1.014 billion.
Judge Emeka Nwite ruled after Malami’s counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN), made an oral bail application, which prosecution counsel Ekele Iheanacho (SAN) opposed, requesting time to respond to a written application submitted late Monday. “In the interest of fair hearing, I remand them in prison until January 2 for bail hearing,” Nwite said.
The EFCC alleges Malami laundered billions, acquiring houses in Abuja, Kebbi, Kano, with assets worth ₦212.8 billion traced to him and associates. The defendants pleaded not guilty. Member of Malami’s legal team, Adedayo Adedeji (SAN), remained optimistic. Would you like updates on the bail hearing or case progress?
