Suspected terrorists kidnapped Oba S.Y. Olaonipekun, monarch of Aafin Community, and his son Olaolu, a serving NYSC member, in Ile-Ire district, Kwara state. The attack occurred around 8 pm on December 31, 2025, with gunmen storming the palace, shooting sporadically, and breaking down doors.
The Olori (queen consort), Felicia Olaonipekun, was shot in the arm but escaped abduction, later receiving hospital treatment. An eyewitness said, “I noticed strange movements outside around 8 pm and alerted those inside. We locked doors and switched off lights, but they started shooting.”
The gunmen, about eight, demanded to see the Kabiyesi, taking him and Olaolu, who was hiding. Ten family members and visitors were present, gathered for New Year festivities. The community’s vigilante unit, with only two members on duty, couldn’t confront the attackers.
The abduction heightens fear in the area, following recent kidnappings, including Ojibara of Bayagan Ile, Kamilu Salami, released after 25 days captivity and a hefty ransom.
