A tragic canoe accident in Adiyani village, Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa State, has claimed 24 lives, with 14 people still missing. The incident occurred while transporting passengers, mostly from Yobe State, across the river. Ten individuals were rescued alive.
“The death toll has risen to 24 people. Ten have been rescued, while 14 are still missing after a canoe capsized in Adiyani village,” said CSP Shiisu Adam, Jigawa State Police spokesperson. 21 deceased were from Yobe State, three locals.
Police collaborate with local divers and community members to locate missing passengers. CSP Adam urged riverine residents to follow safety measures, avoid overcrowding canoes.
The incident has plunged communities into mourning, with families anxiously awaiting news of loved ones.
