Labour Party’s 2023 vice presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, announced his presidential bid for 2027 at a rally at the party’s Abuja secretariat. “I have made myself to contest for the office in 2027. I’m not following anybody’s trajectory or stepping into anybody’s shoes,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed stressed his ambition predates 2023, adding, “Before His Excellency Governor Peter Obi filed for presidency, I aspired for it before him; records are there.” He cited constitutional rights, saying, “Yes, I’m a Muslim, Hausa man, but Nigeria’s constitution allows me contest.”

The declaration comes a week after Obi defected to African Democratic Congress (ADC). Labour Party Chairman Julius Abure praised Baba-Ahmed for staying, saying “The Labour Party is intact”.
