Emeritus Professor Biodun Jeyifo, a celebrated literary scholar, former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and esteemed member of the Pyrates Confraternity, was laid to rest on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. The solemn ceremony, held at the Efunsetan Aniwura Cemetery in Ibadan, Oyo State, drew notable figures, including Nobel Laureate and elder statesman Professor Wole Soyinka, who led members of the Pyrates Confraternity and other dignitaries.
Professor Jeyifo passed away on February 11, 2026, at the age of 80. He was widely recognized for his significant contributions to African literature, intellectual thought, and his tireless advocacy for academic excellence throughout his career.
During the burial rites, Professor Soyinka, accompanied by senior members of the National Association of Seadogs (NAS), delivered a heartfelt address. He celebrated Jeyifo’s impactful life and encouraged younger confraternity members to continue upholding the core values of service, integrity, and intellectual curiosity that Jeyifo exemplified. The ceremony seamlessly blended cultural rites with profound reflections on the Pyrates Confraternity’s enduring legacy in mentorship, unity, and social responsibility.
