Enugu, Nigeria – A rapid-response operation by Nigerian troops has successfully rescued 12 kidnapped victims in Enugu State, highlighting intensified security efforts to combat the rising threat of abductions in the Southeast region of the country.

The rescue operation took place on Friday when troops of the Nigerian Army, operating under Operation Eastern Sanity, acted swiftly following a distress call regarding an abduction in the Ette community, located in the Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area. The troops, attached to the 82 Division Nigerian Army, mobilized quickly alongside operatives from the police, forest guards, and local neighborhood watch groups to track the suspected kidnappers.

Upon reaching the area, the Joint Security team initiated an aggressive search operation and conducted combat patrols across surrounding forests, which were believed to be the kidnappers’ escape routes. Military officials reported that “the suspected criminals abandoned the victims and fled after realising they had been surrounded by the advancing troops.”

Security officials confirmed that “All twelve victims were rescued unharmed during the operation,” adding that troops immediately secured the area and pursued the fleeing suspects. During a follow-up sweep of the location, security operatives apprehended two individuals believed to be connected to the kidnapping gang. These suspects are currently undergoing interrogation as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle the broader criminal network.

Kidnapping for ransom remains a significant security challenge across various parts of Nigeria, with criminal groups increasingly targeting rural communities and travelers on major routes. Security analysts emphasize that swift tactical responses, such as the Enugu operation, are crucial for disrupting kidnapping syndicates that exploit remote forested areas as hideouts.

Military authorities have confirmed that troops have escalated patrols and surveillance across the affected communities to prevent future attacks and reassure residents. Officials stated that this latest rescue operation “reflects ongoing efforts by security agencies to sustain operational pressure on criminal elements and restore public confidence in the region’s security architecture.” For the residents of the Ette community, this successful rescue provides a temporary reprieve in an area that has increasingly felt the impact of Nigeria’s broader security challenges.
