BENIN CITY – Benin City, the capital of Edo State, has achieved significant international acclaim by winning a $1 million innovation award in the prestigious Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge. This recognition places the city among the top global innovators, highlighting its ability to create impactful solutions to critical public challenges, especially in healthcare.
The global competition saw participation from over 600 cities worldwide, with only 25 cities from 20 countries making the final cut. Notably, Benin City is one of only four African cities to reach this impressive milestone. In a statement, Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, confirmed the exciting news.
Reacting to the achievement, Governor Monday Okpebholo described it as a clear reflection of his administration’s dedication to innovation and its ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare systems throughout Edo State. “This recognition is a testament to innovation, resilience, and the unwavering commitment of our team to transform healthcare delivery in Edo State. It reinforces that bold ideas from Benin City can compete — and win — on the global stage,” Governor Okpebholo stated.
Governor Monday Okpebholo extended his congratulations to the Edo State Ministry of Health and the entire team whose tireless work brought this initiative to fruition. He noted that the award underscores the state’s growing reputation as a hub for forward-thinking governance and effective public sector reforms. Governor Monday Okpebholo also commended the citizens of Edo State for their unwavering support and trust in his administration’s programs and policies, which are designed to improve their welfare. “Congratulations to my hardworking team and to the great people of Edo State. The world is watching, and we are just getting started,” he added.
