Authorities in the United Kingdom have announced comprehensive road closures and temporary airspace restrictions in anticipation of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s arrival for a state visit, hosted by King Charles III.
President Tinubu, accompanied by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, is scheduled to commence the visit on Wednesday, March 18, with an official reception at Windsor Castle.
Thames Valley Police issued a statement on Wednesday, confirming its collaboration with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, the Royal Household, and other security partners to ensure a seamless and secure event.
As part of enhanced security protocols for the visit, the permanent airspace restrictions over Windsor Castle will be extended on March 18, operating from 7:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.
Chief Superintendent Adrian Hall of Thames Valley Police’s Joint Operations Unit emphasized the breadth of the security plan, stating, “The air restrictions are just one part of our robust security operation for the state visit of Nigerian President Tinubu next week, with many measures you will see and others you will not.”
Hall highlighted the force’s extensive experience in managing security for royal events in Windsor, noting the significant planning and preparation invested in this operation. He issued a stern warning regarding compliance, stressing that authorities would rigorously enforce the restrictions. “We will be taking a strong stance in enforcing the restrictions; anyone who breaches them will be committing a criminal offence under the Air Navigation Order and could be arrested,” Hall added.
The police also revealed that specialized units, including search teams, mounted units, road policing officers, and armed personnel, will be deployed across Windsor. These units will be supplemented by neighbourhood policing teams and Project Servator resources.
Further security measures will include leveraging Windsor’s extensive closed-circuit television network and hostile vehicle mitigation barriers.
The public has been urged to maintain vigilance and report any suspicious activities by calling 101 or speaking directly with officers on duty. Emergencies should be reported via 999.
Temporary traffic disruptions are expected in and around Windsor, with road closures and parking restrictions set to commence from Tuesday, March 17.
Thames Valley Police confirmed its collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority and National Air Traffic Services to enforce the flight restrictions. Individuals with legitimate reasons to operate drones during the restricted period are advised to contact the police for clearance.
