Three newly elected lawmakers were sworn into office at Nigeria’s House of Representatives on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, taking their seats in the Green Chamber amid expectations of bolstered representation. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas administered the oath of office to Omosede Igbinedion (Ovia South/Ovia West/Ovia North-East, Edo State), Joseph Bagudu (Chikun/Kajuru, Kaduna State), and Mukhtar Rabiu (Garki/Babura, Jigawa State), marking their entry into federal legislative duties.
Their victory came via August 16, 2025, bye-elections organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), filling gaps left by four deceased members — Ekene Adams (Kaduna), Isa Dogonyaro (Jigawa), Olaide Akinremi (Oyo), Oriyomi Onanuga (Ogun) — and Dennis Idahosa’s nomination as deputy governor candidate with Senator Monday Okpebholo in Edo’s 2024 gubernatorial poll.
Speaker Abbas welcomed the trio, highlighting legislative continuity. “Their swearing-in signifies our commitment to ensuring representation continues unhindered in the House as we tackle legislative priorities affecting Nigerians,” he stated, expressing anticipation for their contributions toward national development.
Party performance saw the All Progressives Congress (APC) claiming four of five seats, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winning one. Notably absent were two other bye-election victors, Elegbeji Ayola (Sagamu/Ikenne/Remo North, Ogun State) and Oyekunle Sunday (Ibadan North, Oyo State), with no official reason given for skipping the ceremony.
The ceremony highlighted the House’s resumed plenary activities, integrating fresh faces into ongoing lawmaking processes. Abbas affirmed readiness to address Nigeria’s challenges with the chamber’s renewed composition. “We look forward to their contributions as we pursue outcomes serving Nigeria’s development interests,” he remarked.
The inauguration reflects efforts to maintain legislative functionality amid changes in membership, underscoring roles of elected representatives in Nigeria’s federal governance framework.
