The family of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, popularly known as Sommie, is set to bid farewell to the late Arise Television staff member on Saturday, October 18, 2025, as her remains are laid to rest in Anambra State. Sommie’s life was cut short tragically when she jumped from a three-storey building in Abuja’s Unique Estate during an armed robbery incident.
A poignant service of songs will precede her burial on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at 5:00 PM at Corpus Christi Cathedral, Port Harcourt. Her family has expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support, announcing the main funeral mass at Saint Theresa Catholic Church, Agulu, Anambra State, starting at 11:00 AM on October 18, followed by interment at her father’s compound, Isiamaigbo Village.
Colleagues recall Sommie, 29, as a warm and diligent broadcast journalist covering legal, gender, and social justice beats for Arise TV with clarity and poise. Trained in the UK as a lawyer and journalist, she returned to Nigeria aspiring to contribute to politics and women’s advancement. “She was brilliant, passionate, and dedicated to justice and humanity,” her family affirmed.
A former first runner-up in Miss Tourism Nigeria, Sommie leaves behind memories of positivity and professionalism. Her death has sparked calls for justice and heightened security amid public grief. The FCT Police Command confirms investigations into the robbery are ongoing.
