Today’s gubernatorial election in Anambra State, scheduled for November 8, 2025, is deeply influenced by a historical judicial decision that placed the state on an off-cycle election timetable. On March 17, 2006, the Court of Appeal in Enugu sacked Chris Ngige of the Peoples Democratic Party, whom INEC had declared winner, and installed Peter Obi of the All Progressives Grand Alliance after a two-year tribunal case. This ruling made Anambra one of eight states with off-cycle elections, including Bayelsa, Kogi, Imo, Osun, Ondo, Edo, and Ekiti. A political analyst remarked, “The 2006 court case was a landmark event that redefined Anambra’s political trajectory and underscores the importance of today’s poll.” Sixteen candidates and parties have been cleared by INEC to participate, with front-runners like Governor Soludo Charles of APGA, Ukachukwu Nicholas of APC, Ezenwafor Jude of PDP, Moghalu George of LP, and Nwosu Chima John of ADC. The full candidate list comprises Onyeeze Chidi of A, Nweke Ezechukwu Japhet of AA, Ifemeludike Chioma Grace of AAC, Nwosu Chima John of ADC, Ukachukwu Nicholas of APC, Soludo Charles of APGA, Otti Cyprian Echezona of APM, Nweke Christopher Chukwudubem of APP, Okeke Chika Jerry of BP, Moghalu George of LP, Onyejgbu Geoffrey of NNPP, Ndidi Christy Olieh of NRM, Ezenwafor Jude of PDP, Chukwurah Vincent of SDP, Chukwuma Paul Chukwuka of YPP, and Ugwoji Uchenna of ZLP. With over two million voters eligible across 5,720 polling units in 21 LGAs, the election is a critical event for the state. A voter expressed, “We are eager to exercise our democratic rights and hope for a transparent process that reflects the will of the people.”
