ABUJA – In a significant move towards greater fiscal transparency and accountability, the Federal Government has introduced a monthly revenue dashboard aimed at tracking income and expenditure across all three tiers of government. This initiative, overseen by the Ministry of Finance, is being hailed as a potential game-changer in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to combat corruption and financial opacity.
The new dashboard is designed to provide a public-facing platform for monitoring how allocations are received and spent at the Federal, State, and Local Government levels.
Reacting to this development, the Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) commended the government’s action, describing it as a decisive step towards accountability in public finance management. In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Chukwudi Enekwechi, and Secretary, Segun Ogedengbe, the group asserted that the dashboard “would significantly reduce corruption by exposing revenue inflows and deployment to greater public scrutiny.”
TMV emphasized the critical timing of the dashboard, especially following a presidential executive order freeing up more oil revenues from NNPC Limited and the anticipated inflows from newly implemented tax reforms. The group noted that this digital monitoring framework would enable authorities to track the “enormous resources” expected to accrue to all levels of government. “We acknowledge that the federal government, under the auspices of the Ministry of Finance, has decided to utilise this template to monitor and track the enormous resources that would be accruing to the three tiers of government,” the statement read.
Aligning with the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite, TMV expressed confidence that improved revenues would lead to more productive capital deployment. The group urged governments at all levels to prioritize capital expenditure over recurrent spending, channeling funds into vital sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, and energy. This, they argued, would curb excessive consumption, stimulate economic productivity, and strengthen long-term development.
Beyond infrastructure, TMV projected that enhanced revenue transparency and increased inflows would help reduce debt burdens and enable governments to clear outstanding arrears, while boosting sectors crucial for sustainable growth.
Crucially, the group expressed optimism that the revenue dashboards would empower citizens, providing clearer visibility into how public funds are generated and spent, thereby enabling them to hold officials accountable. For years, civil society platforms have advocated for fiscal transparency, lamenting opaque allocation processes. With this new monthly dashboard, supporters believe the era of guesswork in public finance may be ending.
While the full impact of the platform remains to be seen, the Federal Government has clearly placed revenue transparency at the forefront of its agenda.
