Nollywood icon Genevieve Nnaji is returning to acting after an eight-year break with a lead role in Wahala, a new six-part thriller produced by BBC Studios.

The BBC announced the casting on Tuesday, May 13, 2026, confirming that Nnaji will star alongside Adelayo Adedayo, Deborah Ayorinde, Cush Jumbo and Susan Wokoma. The series will stream on BBC iPlayer and air on BBC One. It is produced by Firebird Pictures, a division of BBC Studios.

Wahala is adapted from the novel Wahala by BAFTA-nominated writer Theresa Ikoko and based on Nikki May’s bestselling debut novel of the same name. The drama follows four Nigerian-British women in their thirties navigating friendship, careers, love and family in present-day London while confronting dark secrets from their past.

The story centres on Simi, Boo and Ronke, played by Adedayo, Jumbo and Wokoma respectively, whose close-knit bond is disrupted by the arrival of Isobel, portrayed by Ayorinde. According to the producers, the drama explores betrayal, buried truths and the consequences of long-hidden secrets.

“I’m very happy to be joining Wahala and to be working with such a brilliant team. It’s an intriguing story and I’m excited to be a part of it,” Nnaji said.

Her last on-screen appearance was in the 2018 hit Lionheart, which also marked her directorial debut. Lionheart premiered internationally in 2018 before streaming globally on Netflix in January 2019. In August 2023, Nnaji returned to production work as an executive producer on the feature film I Do Not Come To You By Chance.

Executive producer Elizabeth Kilgarriff said, “We are thrilled to announce our amazing cast for Wahala and look forward to seeing them bring these fantastic characters to life.”

Wahala, which translates to “trouble” in Nigerian Pidgin, shifts between two timelines and follows the women as buried secrets and painful pasts begin to surface, placing their friendships under increasing strain. The series is one of Nnaji’s most significant acting engagements in recent years.

Widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s most influential actresses, Nnaji has maintained a relatively low public profile since Lionheart, heightening anticipation among fans over her latest role. The announcement has been described as sending a seismic shockwave through the international entertainment industry, confirming the exponential rise of African narratives on premier global streaming platforms.
