Asaba – The Delta State judiciary is grappling with the loss of Hon. Justice Patience Onuwa Elumeze, who passed away on Tuesday in Abuja following a brief illness at the age of 60. Justice Elumeze served as President of the Delta State Customary Court of Appeal until her retirement in April 2023, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and impactful leadership.
Appointed as Acting President in November 2020 by then-Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Justice Elumeze was sworn in as substantive President in June 2021. Colleagues describe her as a compassionate and hardworking leader committed to enhancing justice delivery and staff welfare within Delta State’s customary courts. “She was a kind, passionate, and dedicated leader who worked tirelessly to promote justice,” said court staff speaking anonymously.
During her tenure, Justice Elumeze implemented administrative reforms credited with improving judicial efficiency and expediting case resolution in customary courts across Delta State. Her contributions earned commendation from peers and stakeholders in the state’s legal community.
Visiting the Customary Court of Appeal headquarters along High Court Road in Asaba, discussions among staff and lawyers centered on her passing, with many expressing sorrow over the loss. Justice Elumeze’s death represents a significant loss to Delta State’s judiciary, coming two years after her retirement from active service.
Details of funeral arrangements were not immediately disclosed, but her passing has prompted reflections on her service and impact within Nigeria’s judicial system.
