Abuja – Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, has been confirmed substantive Chairman Independent National Electoral Commission INEC by Senate Thursday marking a significant milestone in the country’s electoral administration.
Professor Amupitan who was Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, University Jos UNIJOS, was nominated INEC Chairman by President Bola Tinubu during last National Council of State meeting. National Council of State backed the nomination paving way for screening at the Senate.
Amupitan pledged to maintain INEC’s independence, audit commission’s system and identify glitches experienced during 2023 Presidential election. “For me, this very important task is a service to the Federal Republic Nigeria,” Amupitan said thanking President Tinubu and National Council of States for the appointment.
Amupitan is the first person from North-Central nominated to occupy INEC Chairman position. The 58-year-old Ayetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State Professor of Law UNIJOS is also an alumnus of the prestigious university.
Amupitan’s expertise is Company Law, Law Evidence, Corporate Governance and Privatisation Law. He earned Senior Advocate Nigeria in September 2014. His Academic career began 1989 following National Youth Service in Bauchi State Publishing Corporation.
Professor Amupitan holds various academic leadership positions including Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, Pro-Chancellor, Chairman Governing Council Joseph Ayo Babalola University Osun State. Author of several law books including Corporate Governance: Models Principles (2008), Documentary Evidence Nigeria (2008).
Senate’s confirmation of Amupitan is seen as a testament commitment to meritocracy, inclusivity in Nigeria’s electoral process.
