DEFENCE MINISTER RECEIVES “AMBASSADOR OF FAIR PLAY” AWARD, PLEDGES CONTINUED SPORTS SUPPORT

ABUJA – The Honourable Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd.) OFR, has been honored with the prestigious and globally recognized “AMBASSADOR OF FAIR PLAY” award by the All Federal Capital Territory Sports Association. The award was presented during the association’s courtesy visit to the Ministry on February 28, 2026. General Musa reiterated his unwavering commitment to supporting sporting activities.

Mr. Richard Pheelangwa, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, accepted the award on behalf of the Minister. He highlighted General Musa’s passion for sports, stating, “He is a Sports Lover and a firm believer in the enormous benefits of sports to national peace and unity, hence he enjoys and participates at various sporting activities both indoors and outdoors including golf. He will be glad to have the award and will always support sports activities.”

Earlier in the visit, Rt. Hon Yakubu Dogara, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the All Federal Capital Territory Sports Association, explained the purpose of their engagement. He emphasized the association’s desire to collaborate with the Ministry to elevate sports, starting with the Federal Capital Territory, to a level where it can contribute significantly to the nation’s development, mirroring global best practices.

Dogara also articulated the association’s vision to leverage sports for economic empowerment, youth engagement, and the reduction of restiveness and criminality, ultimately fostering peace across the country.

Representatives from various sports, including golf, soft/baseball, gymnastics, and basketball, who were present at the event, voiced their appeal for the revitalization of barracks sporting facilities. They stressed that many talented individuals are discovered and nurtured within these organized barrack settings, making them crucial for talent identification.

Other notable attendees included Mr. Maduka, the Permanent Secretary, Special Duties, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and various staff members of the Ministry.
