Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege, former Deputy Senate President of the 9th Senate, has formally declared his intention to contest the Delta Central Senatorial District seat in the 2027 general elections on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Omo-Agege announced this in a statement on Wednesday in Asaba. He said the decision followed extensive consultations and reflection.
“Driven by patriotic duty, resourceful service, and a hopeful vision for our future, I, Ovie Omo-Agege, Deputy President of the 9th Senate, hereby declare my intention to contest the Delta Central Senatorial District seat in 2027 on the platform of the APC.”
Omo-Agege described the declaration as “not a light decision,” noting it followed broad consultations with family members, political leaders, and stakeholders across all eight local government areas of Delta Central.
“It is a response to the humbling calls by our electorate, constituents, professionals, and supporters that I return to the Senate to serve our common good and give unflinching support to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.”
“Clear consensus across Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Udu, Okpe, Sapele, Uvwie, Ethiope East, and Ethiope West that the Urhobo Nation needs an experienced, smart, resourceful, purpose-driven, compassionate, and courageous voice in the Senate once again”, he said.
He added that after prayer and reflection, he concluded that public service is a divine duty. “Having sought the face of our Lord Jesus Christ in prayer, I have concluded that service to my people is a divine duty. I therefore humbly yield to their call,” he said.
Omo-Agege noted that the ambition was collective, aimed at strengthening Delta Central’s influence nationally. He said representation must be purposeful and resourceful, not cosmetic or insipid, insisting Urhobo interests must be strongly defended in national policymaking.
The former Deputy Senate President was the APC governorship candidate in the 2023 Delta State election. He has consistently expressed confidence that the APC will unseat the Peoples Democratic Party in Delta State in 2027. Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Koko, Warri North Local Government Area, Omo-Agege declared, “2027 is our date with destiny. With President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision and achievements, along with our collective resolve, Delta will flip.”
“2027 demands unity. We must put aside divisions between old and new members and work together towards a common goal,” he said. Reflecting on the APC’s narrow loss in 2023, he stated, “We came so close in 2023 but fell short by a whisker. However, we’ve learnt from our mistakes and are now more determined than ever to win Delta State for the APC.”
A chieftain of the APC in Delta State, Chief Williams Makinde, has backed calls for Omo-Agege’s return to the National Assembly in 2027, insisting that established political traditions in Urhobo land favour his candidacy. Chief Makinde, former DESOPADEC Chairman, in a statement, argued that the long-standing power-sharing arrangement between the Eastern and Western Urhobo divisions makes it both “honourable and necessary” for the senatorial seat in Delta Central to revert to the Eastern bloc, thereby positioning Omo-Agege as the most suitable candidate.
“Senator Omo-Agege is the greatest senator that Delta Central has produced in the current democratic era, exceeding all predecessors since Delta State’s formation,” said Mr. Promise Ogumu, a former House of Assembly aspirant for Ika-North East constituency. “His impact spans all geopolitical zones and party lines, making senatorial representation a desirable endeavor. He has transformed the narrative of senatorial engagement in Delta State.”
Omo-Agege had earlier called on Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, to embrace inclusive leadership and prioritise good governance as key strategies for consolidating the gains of the APC in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections. “As the Leader of the party in the State, Mr Governor’s leadership is critical to the collective progress of the party and good governance in the State,” Omo-Agege said at the Delta State APC stakeholders’ meeting held at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Asaba.
