As part of the 2026 Workers’ Day commemoration, Comrade Grace Ike, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists FCT Council, has extended warm greetings to journalists and workers across the Federal Capital Territory and called for stronger measures to address insecurity and economic hardship.
In a statement released for May Day, Ike described this year’s theme, “Insecurity and Poverty: Bane of Decent Work,” as timely and a clear reflection of the challenges workers face nationwide. She said the theme highlights the need to urgently confront insecurity and poverty, which continue to weaken productivity, endanger livelihoods, and diminish the dignity of labour.
According to her, media practitioners in the FCT carry out their work under difficult circumstances and often face threats to their safety while working to inform the public, educate citizens, and hold leaders accountable. “I commend members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists FCT Council for their resilience, courage, and unwavering commitment to ethical journalism despite these challenges,” she said.
Ike pointed out that ongoing insecurity not only puts lives at risk but also limits access to information and prevents journalists from doing their jobs effectively. She added that poverty and growing economic strain are hurting workers’ welfare, morale, and general well-being. “These issues must be addressed with deliberate and sustained action,” she stressed.
She urged authorities at every level to step up efforts to enhance national security and roll out policies that directly reduce poverty. “Ensuring a safe working environment and providing economic opportunities are fundamental to achieving decent work for all Nigerians,” she noted.
The NUJ FCT Chairman also called on media houses and employers in the territory to give priority to journalists’ welfare by ensuring fair pay, better working conditions, insurance protection, and opportunities for continuous professional training. “The protection and motivation of workers remain critical to national progress,” she said.
Ike emphasized the importance of unity within the union. “As a union, we must strengthen our solidarity and continue to advocate for the rights, safety, and dignity of our members. Let us remain united in our pursuit of professionalism, accountability, and excellence, while using our platforms to highlight issues that affect workers and society at large,” she stated.
She encouraged journalists and workers in the FCT to stay resilient and focused despite prevailing difficulties. “Through collective effort, purposeful engagement, and unwavering dedication, we can contribute to building a safer, more equitable, and prosperous society,” she said.
On behalf of the NUJ FCT Council leadership, she wished all journalists and workers in the Federal Capital Territory a thoughtful, safe, and fulfilling May Day celebration.
