Nigerian football legend Augustine “Jay-Jay” Okocha has finally received official recognition for his iconic performance at the 1998 FIFA World Cup, 28 years after Nigeria’s famous victory over Spain.
The 52-year-old former Super Eagles captain was presented with a retroactive “Superior Player of the Match” award for his display in Nigeria’s 3-2 group stage win against Spain at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes, France, on June 13, 1998. FIFA introduced the official Man of the Match award in 2002, leaving standout performances from earlier tournaments unrecognized until now.
Okocha unveiled the silver trophy in a video shared on his Instagram page on Thursday, June 11, 2026, just before the opening fixture of the 2026 World Cup between Mexico and South Africa. “Hello, this is JJ Okocha. I’m about to unveil this special award being given to me by FIFA,” he said in the clip. “It was given to me for winning the Superior Man of the Match in a World Cup game, Nigeria versus Spain 1998. Special thank you to Michelob ULTRA and Copa90 for this amazing recognition. I’m so honoured to receive it,” he added.
Although Okocha did not score in the match, his creativity, dribbling, vision and control in midfield unsettled Spain’s defence, which featured Fernando Hierro and Raúl. Nigeria came from behind to secure the historic upset, with goals from Mutiu Adepoju, an own goal, and a long-range strike from Sunday Oliseh. The win helped the Super Eagles top their group before they were eliminated in the Round of 16 by Denmark.
The award was created by football content platform Copa90 and beer brand Michelob ULTRA under the “Superior Player of the Match” initiative. The project combed through archives to retrospectively honour standout individual performances from World Cup matches played before FIFA introduced the official Player of the Match award in 2002. Organisers said they examined hundreds of matches to identify deserving players.
Okocha’s recognition comes as the 2026 FIFA World Cup co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico gets underway, though Nigeria failed to qualify for this year’s tournament. The honour adds to his enduring World Cup legacy, with FIFA still recognising him as the player with the most successful dribbles in a single World Cup match after completing 15 dribbles against Italy at the 1994 World Cup.
