The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the unsealing of its national secretariat by the Nigeria Police Force as a contemptuous action, warning that the move undermines ongoing judicial processes. The party’s position was contained in a press statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong mnipr.
In the statement, the PDP said the unsealing of the secretariat was carried out in disregard of existing legal proceedings and amounts to an affront on the rule of law. “The unsealing of the PDP Secretariat by the Police is a contemptuous action taken in the face of pending judicial processes and must be condemned by all lovers of democracy,” the statement read.
Comrade Ini Ememobong stated that the party had approached the courts to ventilate its grievances over the sealing of its national headquarters and had expected all parties, including law enforcement agencies, to respect the principle of lis pendens by maintaining the status quo. He said the police action was therefore preemptive and capable of foisting a fait accompli on the court.
“The PDP is a law-abiding organization and will continue to seek redress through constitutional means. We call on the Inspector General of Police to immediately investigate this contemptuous action and sanction officers involved in this clear violation of judicial process,” Comrade Ini Ememobong said in the statement.
The PDP National Publicity Secretary added that the party remains committed to due process and urged members nationwide to remain calm, law-abiding, and vigilant. He stressed that no institution is above the law and that the party would explore all legal options to protect its rights and the sanctity of the judiciary.
Comrade Ini Ememobong concluded the statement by reiterating that the unsealing, done without reference to the court or the party’s leadership, sets a dangerous precedent if left unchallenged.
