The Nigeria Police Force has arrested the sender of the parcel containing a fabricated Beretta pistol and four rounds of 9mm ammunition linked to the killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.

Sources confirmed that the suspect was taken into custody on Wednesday night in Bayelsa State alongside another individual who has not yet been publicly identified. Both suspects are currently being held in custody at Effurun, Delta State, as investigations continue.

Force Public Relations Officer DCP Anthony Placid said the arrests mark a significant development in the case, even as the driver who delivered the parcel from Yenagoa and two vigilante members previously named as fleeing suspects remain at large. Tactical teams have been deployed to apprehend them.

Ogidi was shot dead on April 26, 2026, by Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman at Benin Motor Park after citizens handed him over following the discovery of the weapon in the parcel. Police investigations found that Usman and members of his team engaged in professional misconduct, abuse of office, and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace, culminating in the unlawful killing.

The Police Service Commission has ratified the dismissal of ASP Usman and three other officers, with the case file now forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation for prosecution. “No suspicion, however serious, justifies extra-judicial action,” Placid said, stressing that “every suspect is entitled to due process.”

Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu has extended condolences to Ogidi’s family and assured that justice will be pursued to its logical conclusion. He has also ordered a nationwide audit of arms and ammunition across all state commands to strengthen accountability and prevent the misuse of operational assets.
