The Nigeria Democratic Congress in Enugu State has confirmed the death of one of its members, Nworie Christopher, following a shooting incident at the party’s campaign office in the state capital.

Christopher, who hailed from Affa in Udi Local Government Area, reportedly sustained gunshot injuries during an attack on the campaign office of the party’s governorship candidate, Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa, in the Government Reserved Area of Enugu on October 10, 2026.

The party alleged that armed thugs stormed the facility during a gathering and attacked its members, leaving several people injured. According to the NDC, efforts by its leadership to save Christopher’s life proved unsuccessful.

The incident occurred in two phases on Saturday, first at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu and later at Ohaa’s campaign office in GRA. The party said thousands of its members had gathered at the airport to welcome the governorship candidate when suspected thugs attacked them in the presence of police officers.

Following the incident, Ohaa led a delegation of party officials to Christopher’s family on Tuesday, October 13, to express condolences over the loss. The delegation included his running mate, Chief Frank Omeje, the state chairman, Engr. Ibuchukwu Obeta, the state secretary, Hon. Emmanuel Chukwujekwu Nebo, Prof. Uche Akubue, Hon. Emeke Okeke and the state women leader.

In a statement issued through his media aide, Hon. Sampson Ukwu, Ohaa condemned the killing and expressed concern over what he described as an escalation of political violence against opposition members in Enugu State.

“No election is worth a single drop of a citizen’s blood. Nworie Christopher went out to support a vision for a better Enugu. Today he is gone. His twin brother is left with an empty half of his world. His family is shattered,” Ohaa said.

“His mother is completely heartbroken. We will not be silenced by violence. We will not be intimidated. The blood of Nworie Christopher and all our injured members cries out for justice,” he said.

The NDC described the October 10 attack as the latest in a series of violent incidents targeting its members, including an armed attack on a ward meeting at Obuoffia in Nkanu West on September 12, 2026, where eight members reportedly sustained gunshot injuries, as well as the tear-gassing, shooting, and brutalization of its supporters at the airport.

The Enugu State Government condemned the attack but dismissed reports that a party member died. The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, said on Sunday that no life was lost and that a 43-year-old man identified as Ifeanyi Nworie only sustained a gunshot wound.

The state government said the airport incident was a matter between the party and federal authorities and that the NDC did not secure approval from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria to host a grand statewide rally at the airport.
