A wild elephant attack in Innayin community, Oyo State, has left one person dead and another missing, sparking fear among residents and prompting a swift police response.

The incident occurred around 3pm on Wednesday, April 23, 2026, when the elephant strayed into the community and attacked residents. One Tijani Ibrahim died in the attack, while an Alhaji from the area is still missing.

Confirming the incident, the police said they responded to distress calls from the community and assured that they are managing the situation. Efforts are ongoing to locate the missing Alhaji and prevent further attacks.

Residents of Innayin said the attack has heightened tension in the area, with many afraid to return to their farms and nearby bush paths. Community members are calling on the state government and wildlife authorities to take immediate steps to track the elephant and secure the area.

The attack adds to growing concerns over rising human-elephant conflict in Nigeria, as habitat loss and shrinking forest reserves continue to push wildlife closer to populated areas. Conservationists have warned that without proper corridors, protected habitats, and stronger enforcement against illegal logging and encroachment, such encounters are likely to increase.

As of Thursday, April 24, 2026, the Oyo State Government had not issued an official statement on the incident, but security operatives and forestry officials are said to be on ground in Innayin to restore calm and assess the situation.
