OSOGBO — As Osun State marks 35 years of existence, the Osun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has felicitated the government and residents, and called for a fresh push toward inclusive and sustainable development.
In a statement issued by the Council Chairman, Comrade Adeyemi Aboderin, and Secretary, Comrade Olalekan Akindoju, the union said the anniversary should be a moment for introspection on the state’s progress, accomplishments and the issues still requiring attention.
Osun was carved out of the old Oyo State on August 27, 1991.
According to the NUJ, the state has over three decades grown into a key player in Nigeria’s political, economic, cultural and social space, driven by its human resources, cultural wealth, agricultural strength and hardworking people.
The union acknowledged past governments, traditional rulers, civil servants, labour unions, civil society organisations, entrepreneurs, professionals and ordinary citizens for their roles in keeping the state on course since 1991.
It also spotlighted the role of the media in Osun’s evolution, noting that journalists have consistently served as the public’s eyes and ears by monitoring governance, highlighting lapses, celebrating milestones and amplifying citizens’ voices.
The council paid respects to journalists who have died, describing their service and dedication as part of the state’s enduring legacy.
The NUJ further advocated closer collaboration between government and the press, and urged authorities to treat journalists as critical pillars of democracy.
It equally charged residents to get involved in governance, safeguard public assets, shun violence and fake news, and work toward community development.
Looking ahead, the union said the coming decades must focus on turning Osun’s potential into real prosperity, converting pledges into tangible results, and shifting emphasis from politics to long-term development.
The NUJ prayed for more peace, prosperity, unity, inclusive growth and better living standards for the people of Osun as the state enters a new chapter.
