The family of Taofeek Azeez, 40, has demanded justice after he died in police custody in Agbeye, Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State.
Azeez was apprehended by local vigilantes on Wednesday over an allegation of stealing cocoa seeds and was taken to the palace of the Alagbeye of Agbeye before being handed over to the police. A video showed him being subjected to corporal punishment and paraded half-naked.
His brother, Fatai Alimi, alleged that Azeez was beaten and stripped before detention and questioned the police account that he died by suicide in the cell.
Confirming the incident, Osun Police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi said the deceased was apprehended by the community over alleged theft. Azeez reportedly left behind six children, three wives and an aged mother.
