The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized the Federal Government for allowing US officials to announce airstrikes on Nigerian soil before Nigerian authorities spoke out. “Nigerians were notified of the American strike on terrorists’ assets through verified social media pages of President Trump and other American officials before the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a vague statement hours later,” said Comrade Ini Ememobong, PDP National Publicity Secretary.
The party expressed concern over this “inverted communication approach”, arguing the FG should’ve led in informing citizens to manage public perception. “The Federal Government should have been the first to report the news to properly sensitize Nigerians, instead of waiting to confirm news already circulating,” Ememobong added.
PDP urged the FG to ensure defense agreements with the US prioritize joint operations for knowledge sharing and capacity building, rather than externally-led “precision attacks”. The party cited past reports of US military operating in Nigeria without government knowledge or permission.
