Gombe State – The Near Foundation, in collaboration with Nizamiye Hospital, has successfully restored the sight of no fewer than 68 patients in Gombe State through a recent cataract outreach program. The initiative, held at the General Hospital Deba in Deba Local Government Area, is part of ongoing efforts by these organizations to enhance access to quality eye care services in underserved communities.
Beyond the life-changing surgeries, the program also provided support to a broader range of patients. Fifty individuals received corrective eyeglasses, while an additional 200 were treated with medicated eye drops for various eye conditions.
Medical experts involved in the outreach highlighted that the primary goal of the initiative was to decrease instances of preventable blindness and to improve the overall health and wellbeing of the residents. Beneficiaries of the program expressed profound gratitude to the organizers, noting that the free surgeries and treatments offered significant relief, particularly to those who would otherwise be unable to afford the high cost of eye care.
Health officials present at the event also took the opportunity to educate the public on the critical importance of regular eye examinations and early intervention for eye conditions to prevent potential complications.
This successful outreach program exemplifies the increasing collaboration between healthcare organizations and non-governmental bodies, working together to expand vital medical services to remote and rural communities across the region.
