The Kebbi State Police Command has arraigned 30-year-old Ibrahim Karaye for allegedly killing his father, Bajago Karaye, with a pestle during a domestic dispute at their home in Birnin Kebbi on 30 March 2026.
Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, said the incident was reported to the Central Market Police Division at about 7:15 a.m. after neighbours raised an alarm. “On 30th March 2026, at about 6:40 a.m., we received a distress call that one Ibrahim Karaye, 30, of Birnin Kebbi, had used a mortar pestle to hit his father, Bajago Karaye, on the head during a quarrel at their residence,” the police said.
The victim was found lying in a pool of blood and was rushed to Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital, Birnin Kebbi, by police officers and members of the community. He was confirmed dead on arrival by a medical practitioner. The suspect was arrested at the scene and the pestle allegedly used in the attack was recovered as an exhibit.
During interrogation, the suspect confessed to striking his father. “The suspect admitted that the incident happened following a heated argument over family matters. He said he picked the pestle in anger and hit the deceased,” CSP Nafiu Abubakar said.
Commissioner of Police, Bello M. Sani, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet investigation and prosecution. “The Commissioner of Police condemns this act and urges members of the public, especially youths, to always seek lawful means of resolving disputes and to desist from taking the law into their own hands,” the police said.
Ibrahim Karaye has been arraigned before a Chief Magistrate Court in Birnin Kebbi on a charge of culpable homicide. The court ordered that he be remanded in the correctional facility pending legal advice from the State Ministry of Justice. The Command assured residents that justice will be served and appealed for calm in the community.
