Controversial street-pop artiste Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, escaped unhurt after his car suffered brake failure and crashed into a ditch on Thursday night in Ogun State, hours before his son’s naming ceremony.
The incident occurred on May 7, 2026, while the singer was driving within his neighbourhood in Ogun State as he prepared for the ceremony. Portable said he deliberately swerved off the road to avoid colliding with another vehicle after realizing his brakes had failed.
Sharing details in a video posted to his Instagram story, the singer said, “My fans, join me to appreciate God. I was just driving out this evening when the accident happened. Nothing do me oo, I came out unhurt. I suddenly realized that the car had failed brake.” He added, “I thank God my people did not come here to carry my corpse.”
Portable noted that the outcome could have been worse if a trailer had been passing at the time. “Thank God that the accident didn’t happen when the trailer was passing on the road,” he stated.
The crash happened barely a day before the naming ceremony of his newborn son, Fijabi, with his wife, Bewaji. Portable revealed that preparations were already underway for the event. “I’ve already bought two cows for my son’s naming ceremony,” he said.
Despite the scare, the singer confirmed that the ceremony would proceed as planned. He had earlier generated buzz online after distributing free Ankara aso ebi fabrics to fans and well-wishers ahead of the event.
Bewaji gave birth during Portable’s celebrity boxing match with Carter Efe on Friday, May 1, 2026. The baby’s birth coincided with a busy period for the singer, who has remained in the headlines for both his music and public appearances.
In the aftermath of the crash, Portable appealed to the government to fix the road where the accident occurred. “I pressed the brake, but it did not respond. I do not want to die. Ogun saved me. Nothing happened to me. My car is not damaged. Let the government come and complete this road,” he said.
Emergency responders and associates arrived at the scene shortly after the incident. The singer described his survival as divine intervention and thanked God for sparing his life.
