A fire at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, killed several dozen people and injured at least 100 during New Year’s celebrations. The blaze erupted at 1:30 a.m. Police ruled out an “attack,” attributing it to unknown causes. Authorities cordoned off the area, established a no-fly zone, and set up a helpline for concerned families.

“It was an evening of celebration that turned into a nightmare,” said Mathias Reynard, Valais government president, offering condolences to victims’ families. Officials are “stunned,” said Frédéric Gisler, Valais police commander. Crans-Montana, a Swiss Alps resort attracting 3 million visitors yearly, is now closed amid investigations.
