Akwa Ibom State has taken delivery of the first batch of 20 Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, buses out of 50 ordered by the government to modernise public transportation across the state.
Governor Umo Eno received and inspected the buses on Monday at Government House, Uyo, describing the development as a major step toward transforming the state’s transport sector.
“We have just received the first 20 buses. We ordered 50, and they will come in batches. The next step is to get the terminals ready,” Eno said. He added that the remaining 30 buses would arrive in batches while government intensifies work on modern bus terminals.
The governor said the CNG buses are part of efforts to provide safer, easier and more efficient transportation services across the 31 local government areas. He noted that the initiative aligns with his administration’s commitment to making transport “easy and simple” for residents.
“We have already paid for the tracking devices, and we will install trackers, introduce an electronic ticketing system, and put every necessary facility in place. This speaks to a better transport system for Akwa Ibom State,” he said.
Eno said the project would be supported by the completion of bus terminals, installation of vehicle tracking systems and a modern ticketing platform to improve efficiency, safety and accountability.
He commended the Ministry of Transport, contractor, the military and other stakeholders for ensuring the successful delivery.
Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Anthony Luke, praised the governor’s vision for the sector. “He noted the arrival of buses is a testimony to the fact that the governor is very intentional and concerned about making life better for the people,” Luke said.
Governor Eno stressed that the improved road network in the state provides the foundation for the new transport system. “Akwa Ibom has one of the best road networks in Nigeria after Abuja. What we promised our people is that we would make transport easy and simple,” he said.
He urged residents to remain confident in the administration’s agenda. “Meaningful development requires patience, planning and consistent execution,” he said, describing the intervention as a sign of a brighter future for the state.
